The People's Poll is published by Onward Media LLC ("we," "us"). It tracks published public opinion polls on U.S. elections and national questions, and shows polling averages, trends and every poll behind them. We're not a polling firm, a campaign, a party or an advertiser, and we're not affiliated with The New York Times or any pollster whose polls we show.
Right now, The People's Poll is a read-only site and app. Voting and accounts are not open yet (see section 9).
a. When you visit the site or use the app
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Standard request data that every website receives: IP address, browser or device type, the page requested, time | To deliver pages, keep the service secure and stop abuse | Our own logs store a salted, one-way hash of your IP address, never the IP itself, and are kept for a short operational period (no more than 30 days). Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, handles traffic under its own policy (section 5). |
A security cookie, pp_csrf | Protects forms against cross-site request forgery | 30 days |
Your light or dark mode choice, if you pick one (pp-theme) | To remember your display preference | Stored only in your browser. We never receive it. |
b. When you join the "notify me" list
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To send you one email when the People's Poll opens | Until you ask us to delete it, or 90 days after we send the launch email, whichever comes first |
| The page you signed up from, and the time | To understand which pages people sign up from, in aggregate | Same as above |
| A salted, one-way hash of your IP address | To limit repeated sign-ups and abuse | Same as above |
| A bot check (Cloudflare Turnstile) | To confirm a person, not a bot, is signing up | Handled by Cloudflare; we receive only a pass or fail result |
Your email address is stored encrypted (AES-256-GCM), with the key kept separately from the data. We don't use it for anything else, and we never share or sell it.
c. In the iPhone app
What we don't collect: we don't collect your name, phone number, precise location, contacts, photos, payment information or government ID. We don't collect political opinions or demographic information today.
We use the information above only to run and secure The People's Poll, send the one launch email you asked for, and answer messages you send us. We don't use it for advertising, profiling, selling, or any automated decision about you.
We use one strictly necessary security cookie (pp_csrf) for visitors. Staff who sign in to our admin panel also get a sign-in cookie. We don't use advertising cookies, third-party analytics (such as Google Analytics) or tracking pixels (such as the Meta Pixel), and we don't share browsing data with anyone for advertising. Because we don't track you across sites or sell information, there's nothing to opt out of.
We share information only with the service providers that run The People's Poll for us, and only so they can do that job:
| Provider | What they do | What they process |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Hosting, security, bot checks (Turnstile), our database, and email forwarding for our support address | Site traffic; encrypted notify-list data; messages you email us |
| Resend | Sending the launch email | Your email address, only when we send |
| Apple | App Store and TestFlight distribution of the iPhone app | Whatever Apple collects under its own privacy policy when you download apps |
We don't sell, rent or license personal information. We'll disclose information to authorities only when the law requires it, only to the extent required, and we'll tell you when the law lets us.
The poll data we display comes from public sources (published polls compiled by The New York Times under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license). It contains no information about you.
You can ask us to:
Email support@peoplespoll.com from the address in question. We'll respond within 45 days, and may extend that once, by 45 more days, if a request is complex; if so, we'll tell you. If we turn down a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer. If we deny the appeal, you can contact your state attorney general.
We offer these rights to everyone, wherever they live in the United States, and we won't treat you differently for using them.
The People's Poll is for adults 18 and older and isn't directed to children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us information, email support@peoplespoll.com and we'll delete it.
We use HTTPS for every connection, encrypt stored email addresses, store only salted hashes of IP addresses, and require two-factor sign-in for staff. No system is perfectly secure. If we ever learn of a breach affecting your information, we'll notify you as the law requires.
When we open voting, people will be able to answer the same questions the pollsters ask. That will involve sign-in accounts and storing answers. We'll update this policy before those features go live, and tell everyone on the notify list what's changing before it takes effect. Nothing in this section is in effect today.
The People's Poll is operated from the United States for people in the United States. Information is processed and stored in the United States.
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. If you're on the notify list, we'll also email you. The new version applies from its effective date.
